    Hi all

I will be first time trekking Kokoda in the first week of December this year and have a few questions…

Will cotton cargo pants or shorts keep me warm enough during the day?

Do I need to take some seriously warm clothing for nighttime or will a run of the mill jumper be sufficient for that time of year?

Do I spend some serious cash and buy top quality outdoor clothing or will the average stuff hold up?

Do I go a couple of long sleeve button-up shirts or a mix with t-shirts?

    Thanks in anticipation…

    Hi,

Cotton quick dry shorts are what you need, it's hot & humid during the day, even when it rains. Depending on your skin type, short or long sleeve cotton shirts, good quality boots, cotton work socks. My son & I took 1 pair of shorts, 2 King Gee work shirts, 2 T shirts, 1 more pair of shorts for after your wash, 4 pairs of socks, thermal's for night ( light & easy to pack, and it gets pretty cold high up, more so when it rains) and 1 light jumper. We took a 9+ sleeping bag and when it got cold, slept in the thermals. Make sure you take a good quality tent, and waterproof it. Depending on who you are going with, some trekking company's supply tents, but after our expierence, I would definatly take your own. Their tents leak.

Gaters are good, just the short work boot ones did the trick for us, the humidity is a killer at first, but you get used to it, you are going in the Wet Season, so make sure you take a rain poncho, and pack cover, I took two rain poncho's and gave one to my porter. Don't skimp on your boots, buy good quality ones.
    have fun

Editors Note: before anyone gets the wrong impression, the author did not walk with Kokoda Trekking but with another company.

Thanks for the input. So do I go long sleeve shirts or short sleeve? Shorts or pants? Or combinations?

    Hi,

some of the people in our group wore long sleeves and some short, it depends on your skin type, I wore short sleeves and shorts, long pants I think are way too hot, but some wore long pants and it didn't worry them. Just to clarify, I didn't go with Kokoda Trekking, but will next time.

Beside the weather, do insects like you? tongue.gif If they do, it's something else in favour of long sleeves even if they're light ones. The same deal applies for long pants over shorts.

During the day, bitey's are not a real problem, the mozzies are pretty vicious around Kokoda & Hoi, but up higher they didn't seem to bother us.

    Hi tbrennen

I shouldn't think you will have any problems with low temperatures in December. I used to live in Moresby for many years and I was never cold in December, but that was Moresby.

I also walked the Track in April/May '05 and the river for bathing was bloody cold up at Camp 1900! Night time was OK, I had a light sleeping bag ($10 at FDB) and a long sleeve cotton T and light cotton tracky pants and was always comfortable. Day time was quite good for short sleeve shirt and shorts (same ones for 9 days), shirt was washed every smoko and draped over a rock, shorts, well that was another story. I attempted to wash them well back in Moresby in the shower and my faithfull Porter, Maurice appreciated them. Some people did wear long sleeves and trousers but I'm glad I didn't wear them.

Good luck with your trek and ask as many questions as you like. it will help you enjoy your experience.

    Cheers
