MemberThis morning saw Trek 120 head out to Kokoda for a 6 day Fast Trek led by Pam Christie, PNG Trekking who hires our guides and porters as sub-contractors to walk with her:
At 6am the following trekkers headed to Jackson's Airport to book in for their flight to Kokoda. At Kokoda airstrip is Sailas our Kokoda Guide waiting to meet them all along with other porters who will accompany them today all the way to Alola. Yes, a 6 day trek is a tough one. Most trekkers on a 9 day trek are lucky to make it to Isurava Battlesite area so they have a big day ahead of them.

MemberTrek 65 returns on the same flight that the above trekkers flew out on this morning and should touch down here in Port Moresby by 9:45am this morning.
Our plan is to drop them at the Gateway to book into the hotel and later today to drive them around and have lunch at the Yacht Club if they are still all feeling fit following their Kokoda Trek.
Trekkers are:
Aaron Hunt; Errol Munro; Greg Clark; Patrick White; Tom Orme; Richard Feist & Gary Andrews all from Townsville. All of us here at Kokoda Trekking congratulates them for their successful trek.
The above group of trekkers who work in the medical profession, put some money together and brought with them to PNG a large box of medicine to hand over to the Kokoda Hospital.
With reference to the Kokoda Hospital, Rotary International built the hospital some years back and also a house for a doctor.
Sadly the hospital is still there but no doctor in attendance. As such the hospital does not get the respect it should by the PNG Health Department who hand out medical supplies in Popondetta for this region.
If only we could find a doctor who was prepared to give some voluntary time to come to PNG and study tropical medicine whilst attending to the sick in Kokoda and surrounding areas, what a difference this would make.
Ourselves at Kokoda Trekking this year donated an ambulance so that patients can be transported down to Popondetta for treatment.
In order for the hospital however to be any good to a doctor, it would need other equipment donated as it has nurses; beds; mattresses; linen etc but not much else I have been informed.
Kokoda also needs help for nurses to be able to go out and attend to people in villages, ie a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
On Tuesday this week we have two nurses from the hospital coming in on our charter to get their paper work in order to travel down to Australia for further training which has been organised by the Australian High Commission.

MemberA radio message just received, trekkers arrived in Kokoda ok but minus three backpacks.
I just phoned up the airline but there answer was that there was another flight scheduled this morning so it will be on the next flight.
A word of warning to all trekkers, check before you leave to see if your backpack has been loaded in the aircraft as we cannot possibly do that as like in Australia once it is taken out of sight at the traffic counter its the last we see of it.
Trekkers however when boarding can ask to check if their backpack has been loaded on the aircraft. If not, I suggest they strongly talk to the traffic people and inform them to take something else off and put their backpack ON.
We now have a situation in Kokoda where we have fast trekkers wanting to get moving and they are forced to wait around for another 2 hours waiting on their backpack and the next flight from Port Moresby to arrive in Kokoda.
