MemberHey guys and girls
Just looking to meet some new people and make myself known on this website – myself and a few friends are looking to make the trip to Kokoda in late 2007/early 2008 (gives us plenty of time to get fit and plan haha…) and I figure it would be great to get a group together and head over.
Any thoughts on the pros/cons of a guided trek in contrast to a self-guided one? Is the extra cost involved with the former well worth it?
If anyone is interested please email me or let me know via this post.

My mates & i did the track July 04 and i would strongly suggest that you do a guided tour for many reasons No.1 being that you come out the other side.
Also do not underestimate the value of local knowledge in sourcing accomodation and food. The best part about hiring local people as guides and carriers is giving them valuable employment and learning what wonderful people they are. If you have any questions i frequently check this forum and will also do the track again one day.Cheers
Paul

MemberHey Paul, thanks for your reply.
I may have described the sort of trip we were looking at taking – I have seen some advertised where you use a local guide – I think the exact wording was "an experienced local trek guide" – I was under the impression that this was called a self-guided tour but I may be wrong. There is definately no way I'd head into there by myself on the first trip hehe – I do know some who would be happy if I never came out of the jungle <img src="http://developer2/board/upload/style_emoticons//tongue.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:P” border=”0″ alt=”tongue.gif” />

Memberthecorpusdelicti, I am very interested in doing the walk in 2007. I wanted to do it in June, July or August. I have a few friends interested in it as well. We will be coming from the US. It will be our first time as well, but I am so excited and have already begun my training.

How many of you guys and girls are looking at going? We were considering getting a firm list of people together who will be making the trek and the having a get-to-know-you sort of weekend in Brisbane a month or so before we jump on the big metal birds bound for PNG…

I have 1 girl who will do it with me from the US. I have 2 guys who will not committ as they think it is to far away. My husband hasn't decided. I have a friend in England who will do it if I ask him. I also have my 3 others in Australia who want to do it but I would rather they didn't. So we are talking of 1 confirmed and 8 unconfirmed. I couldn't do a met and greet 1 month in Brisband before as I'll fly direct LA to BNE drop my kids at grandparents and then to PNG. My dad lives in PM so he is pretty keen for me to get there. But I could meet the night before leaving BNE. We should keep in touch.
