MemberMost of our food went down to Kokoda last Thursday via Popondetta on a Dash 8 charter and then transported by road in KTL 1 – our Mitsubishi Canter based in Kokoda. The Dash 8 charter was hired to bring in all our porters and guides for the treks that headed out from Ower's Corner on the 15th & 16th April.
However, this is the food for the half way point to be dropped off at Efogi today 17th April, 2005 – biscuits and more biscuits for the porters who just love them. Larger boxes are for our trekkers:

MemberDue to weather conditions last Friday night, some flights were delayed and landed at Nadzab Airport in Lae and trekkers missed the briefing.
They later arrived around 8pm at the Crowne Plaza where we met up with them.
Two trekkers stayed at the Weigh Inn Hotel and the remaining trekkers stayed at the Gateway Hotel by far the most popular hotel for trekkers as it is situated only 5 minutes away from the airport.

MemberUpdate 17th April, 2005:So far so good, all trekkers are moving along ok and the only injury so far was to one of our porters, Russell's brother Johnsford who slipped over and split his knee open.
Some porters carried him back to Veselugo where he was picked up today and later transported back into Port Moresby for treatment. He got 9 internal stitches and 6 external stitches. He along with the other remaining porters will return to Kokoda on Wednesday who came in with our first group of trekkers.

MemberUpdate 19th April, 2005; Things are looking pretty good out on the trail. Everyone?s doing ok, both trekker?s and porters all doing well. With some entertainment from the porters and guides (strumming their ukulele and singing songs along the trail), it seems the trekkers are having a really good time.
Chris Suma (guide) first group; all trekkers and porters are doing ok, spent the night at Efogi 1 yesterday (18th April) now heading toward Naduri, where they will spend the night.
Isaac guide (group 51.A); all doing well, heading toward Efigi 1 to spend the night. Isaac say?s, his group is a fit bunch.
Eric guide (group 51.B) all doing pretty good, spent last-night at Nauro, now heading toward Menari, to spend the night.
And the lucky last group;
Landy guide (group 51.C) everyone?s doing fine, their current location is at Nauro Look-out Point and are now heading toward Menari where they will be spending the night. Landy?s group also has one of our eldest trekker?s, Henry Walter Kelly. He?s doing really well so far, and has been walking with everyone, trekkers and porters and even the guide himself. Landy say?s, his very strong and very fit.19/04/2005 at 9:52 am #95124Jessie Garap
MemberThere's a slight bit of change with Eric and his group 51.B. They?ve decided not to spend the night at Menari, but to proceed on to Efogi 1, where they share the same camp site with Isaac's group (51.A). Eric and group, current location, Brigade Hill.
For the other groups, there are no changes.
Also over heard Gail and Henry Walter Kelly?s conversation on the two way radio. Walter Kelly said he's having a really good time, loves the weather and he?s very much enjoying the kokoda track

MemberUpdate 20th April, 2005; Chris and his group are now heading up to Myola Junction, where they will all have breakfast before proceeding on.
Chris?s group also bumped into some of our trekkers at Kagi, Group?s 55.A and 55.B who are heading the opposite direction. All trekkers are doing ok and still looking fit.
Isaac and his group have now left Naduri and are heading toward Templeton?s Crossing. Although the trail is muddy and slippery, all his trekker?s are doing really well
Latest; Landy?s group, all doing fine, their current location is at Brigade Hill. They will proceed on to Efogi 1 and spend the night.
Chris and his group have just reached Mt Bellamy; they will have lunch there and proceed on to Templeton?s 2 to spend the night. His trekkers all doing ok and are very much enjoying the entertainment the porters are giving them.
The ground at their end is muddy, but it seems the trekkers like it.As for Eric and his trekkers, they?ve finally reached Naduri, together with Cyprian and Tony?s Group?s, 55.A and 55.B. They'll all have lunch there and then move on, all in their respective directions.

Warren from Group 83, could you please let me know when and where 62 & 83 meet for a briefing, or will you let us know when we hit Moresby?
Also can you let me know a rough itinerary, so I can advise family members and work mates. This afternoon will probably be the last time I can access my computer.
Thanks Jessie/Gail
Regards

MemberHi Warren
Usually all briefings are made, the night before your track begins, which is on the next day. So you get a better chance of discussing about anything and ask as many questions as you like to prepare yourself for the next days track adventure.
Mostly all briefings are held at the Gateway Hotel. Gail will answer to your questions, so I?m pretty sure you will get all the information you will need off her.
Cheers?.
JessieEditors Note: All trekkers are invited to the same room as the trekkers coming in from our Anzac Day treks at 6pm on the 24th April for a briefing.

MemberHi Warren, the trek may differ depending on how the trekkers are going but will be something similar to the following:
Day 1: POM – KOKODA – ISURAVA – Arrive in Kokoda and meet our Kokoda Trekking Porters & Guides after a 20 minute flight from Port Moresby. A short walk from the airstrip to Kokoda Station for a tour of the War Museum and other attractions.
Day 1: KOKODA – ISURAVA – It is here that the reality hits you – the Kokoda Trail will not be easy. It is quite steep at the beginning; however, do not throw in the towel yet. After about five hours walk, you arrive at Isurava. It was the site of a significant World War II battle and now one of the most – sacred sites along the trail. Here, you enjoy panoramic views of the Kokoda and Yodda valleys then overnight at the village guest house.
Day 2: ISURAVA – IORA CREEK – We set off for the next village of Alola, and on to Iora Creek, where we overnight.
Day 3: IORA CREEK – TEMPLETON'S CROSSING – Today starts with a steep climb, then a descent, to Templeton's Crossing where we spend the night under the forest canopy and the gentle voice of the Iora Creek splashing against the rocks. Trout fishing is available for those who have fishing lines.
Day 4: TEMPLETON'S CROSSING – KAGI – Day 5 begins with another climb up and down, another crossing of Iora Creek, and then a climb to the top of Mount Bellamy, the highest point of the Kokoda Trail. An enjoyable walk through a carpet of moss, to the junction of Myola and Kagi, which is marked by an aircraft propeller. We turn right from here, make a climb, and then descend to the village of Kagi where we overnight. Kagi commands spectacular views of villages along the Kokoda Trail.
Day 5: KAGI – MENARI – We start early with a walk to the airstrip, reputed to be the steepest in the world, descend to the creek, and then ascend to Efogi No. 2 village. When we look back, we can see how we have walked all the way from Kagi. From here, descend to Efogi, where we rest and collect our pre – arranged food drop. From here, we climb up to Brigade Hill – which together with Isurava is one of the most – sacred sites of the Kokoda Trail – and then descend to Menari village where we spend the night.
Day 6: MENARI – NAORO – We start with a steep hill and are rewarded from the summit with fine views of Menari. We make a muddy, swampy, and at times leech – infested trek to the Brown River, which we must cross with care especially if in flood. We walk on to Naoro where we overnight.
Day 7: NAORO – VA'ULE CREEK – We start by climbing the heartbreaking false peaks of Maguli Ridge (you can count them yourself). We descend to Ofi Creek for a well – deserved break, make another climb to Ioribaiwa Ridge, and then descend to Va' Ule Creek where we spend our last night.
Day 8: VA'ULE CREEK – OWERS' CORNER – Our last hard grind up the Imita Ridge, and then descend the 'Golden Stairs' to the Goldie River. A last refreshing dip before climbing up to Owers' Corner.

MemberUpdate 21st April, 2005;
Tony and trekkers, 55.A.All trekkers are doing well. The weather at there end is pretty good, so is the track.Trekker?s leader Rob, who had a radio conversation with Gail on the two-way radio, told Gail that, all the porters and guide are fantastic, wonderful bunch of guys. They?ve done a really good job taking care of his group, and his team of trekker?s are very pleased. He also said that they are all doing fine and enjoy the walk.
Chris and his group have just reached Eora. All his trekkers are doing good, still looking fit and are moving fast. Weather at their end is fine, not like the first 2 days of their track, so they?re very much enjoying the weather and track and are looking forward to giving us the latest details when they reach their next destination, Isurava Battlefield.
Eric and his trekker?s 51.B,all doing fine, reached Mt Bellamy not 5 minutes ago. They will proceed on to Templeton?s Crossing and fill us in on their latest.
Lendy and trekker?s 51.C, all doing great, they?re current location, Naduri and heading toward Myola Junctions. He will fill us in on their latest when they reach their next destination.
Latest update:
Chris and his trekkers are currently at Isurava. They will be spending the night at one of the porter?s, Billy White's guest house. All his trekkers are ok. He said they managed to catch 7 Trout?s (fish) and 2 Ells in the creek yesterday afternoon. And they had the 7 Trout?s for dinner last night with some rice that was cooked in bamboo and left the Ells for today. The food porters thought they should put a little bit of PNG style to it.
At this time, the food porters are preparing the evening meal, Chris sound very much excited because they are having chips, chicken and ell for dinner. So while the food porters are busy doing that, the rest of the porters and guide are showing the trekkers around. Some trekkers prefer just sitting and sharing a joke or two with their porter or just telling stories about the trail or experiences. For Isaac 51.A & Eric 51.B, both groups are heading for the same camp site, Eora Creek. All their trekkers are doing well. Eric who called in from the two-way radio not long ago said that, their current location was in the middle of Templeton?s and Eora Creek. So they are still moving towards Eora, it would take them half an hour before they reach their camp site.
Landy – 51.C is trailing right behind both Eric and Isaac?s groups. He?s group will be spending the night at Templeton?s 1. His trekkers are ok, everyone?s doing fine, their current location is at Kokoda Gap and they are heading to their camp site. Landy just informed me that Walter Kelly?s been doing really good and still looking fit.
Walter is very much happy and proud of himself, for coming this far and his really excited and can?t wait to reach the end of the trail.

MemberGreat News: Our visually impaired trekker has done ok and all our porters have taken turns to look after him. Trekkers have been so impressed that they contributed money and have sent two food porters ahead to Kokoda to go to Popondetta this morning on our truck to purchase beer and meat for a barbeque lunch tomorrow 23rd April.
Other good news is that our 81 year old veteran will MAKE IT TO KOKODA….excellent – to a HERO's WELCOME by all and sundry. What an achievement. If I am still alive and ok at 81 I will be a happy person, but to contemplate walking the Kokoda Trail is amazing and all of us here at Kokoda Trekking are just so proud of his achievement and determination.
Cant wait to meet all our 'Anzac Day Trekkers' after they arrive back here in Port Moresby on the 24th April.
Well done to all our porters and guides, we are just so proud of them, all proud PNG guys!
