I've been walking 4-6km four or 5 times a week for over a year. Mostly fairly flat but some gentle rises. 2 weeks ago had some soreness in ankles so on advice of physio have stopped hard walking and am swimming 1k a morning and on excercise bike for 30-50 mins at night, plus lots of streaches (half hour morning & night) for the calf muscles. Will get back to walking again in a week or so. After getting back into walking routine will add hills and stairs. Am planning on paying for personal porter (doing the track in April) and only carrying day pack of abt 6kg.
    Will i be fit enough?

Hi there, I think you seem much fitter than myself and I managed to walk the trail in 9 days. Re your ankles, I was advised to wear ankle straps which you can purchase at a chemist store and it helped me a lot. I suggest you purchase a pair and start walking with them. There are various sizes so make sure you get one to fit and that feel comfortable. I trained 4 times per week walking the stairwell where I work from the ground to the 12th floor and back + a couple of 5 k walks during the last month.

I also carried 10-11kg in my day pack and once again it was ok for me. The emphasis has to be on hill walking and steps, the steeper the better for your training sessions – anything to build up the muscles directly above your knees. Also cut your toe nails short before you start training. I paid for a personal porter and for my fitness level I would not have considered trekking without one.
