MemberIn the suggested equipment you have a two man tent. Is one required for each walker or is it possible to share?

MemberWith the last trek, one guy left some nuts and other goodies outside his tent and a dog came along and ate them. Hence, it was suggested that even a single guy sleep with his backpack in his tent especially if it contains food.
Agree wholeheartedly with the previous suggestion, you must look for the lightest tent possible. A mother and son shared a tent on the last trek and they said it was cosy but would recommend where possible to purchase separate tents to allow for a bit more freedom of movement. Their tent however, had a flap where they could put their backpack.
With Andrew above, he was travelling with his girlfriend which is a whole different ball game !

Member<img src="http://developer2/board/upload/style_emoticons//ohmy.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:o” border=”0″ alt=”ohmy.gif” /> It's going to be my first time to use a tent, Is it easy to assemble ? What will happen if I can't erect my tent ? Is there such thing as a lady's tent that is "easy" to carry and use. Sounds like a silly question but really I want to spend my time
enjoying and discovering kokoda not my " tent ". suggesstions and advices are most welcome.Thanks. <img src="http://developer2/board/upload/style_emoticons//smile.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:)” border=”0″ alt=”smile.gif” />08/10/2003 at 12:29 am #93778aussie
MemberYou only have to bring a tent…..our porters will attend to your every need.
They will set it up for you….cook for you…..etc….all you have to do is trek and ENJOY the SCENERY or talk to the people in the villages or simply RELAX!!!

Memberoh…I forgot….make sure you get a 'good quality' tent as the last group that were out on the trail earlier this month got saturated as all but 2 tents leaked.
So best to test with a hose before coming………..

MemberI was one of the people who had a tent that leaked on the September trek. I went for a tent that was light weight (2kg) – but I paid for it.
MAKE SURE IT IS WATER-PROOF
I had a great time though and it kept me busy during the rain catching the drips with plates, cups and water bottles.

MemberPerhaps I am stupid, but I wonder why companies would manufacture a tent in the first instance THAT LEAKED, surely all tents 'should' face some kind of quality control before being released and sold.
I mean how many of you would seriously consider purchasing a tent if it had written on it…..NON Waterproof, Tent….haha DONT THINK SO!!!

MemberSilly me. Maybe I should check next time. They only advertised it as a light- weight hiking tent.
By not water-proofing it, they can make it lighter.18/06/2004 at 4:16 pm #94267Aaron_88
MemberHello, im new to these forums, but as to the tents is it ok to us a hoochie, im not sure if that is correct spelling, but this seems to be a lighter alternative to a tent.

MemberHi Aaron, what is a hoochie?

MemberA Hootchie is a sheet of water proof canvas used by the Army. Be warned it is only that a sheet of canvas so you would require a mossy net to attach to it. My advise is from an ex Army perspective you have not slept under a hootch b4 it is probably not a good time to start. Stick with a tent. <img src="http://developer2/board/upload/style_emoticons//biggrin.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:D” border=”0″ alt=”biggrin.gif” />

MemberFor my trek I purchased a COLEMAN 2 man tent and it was absolutely great. Plenty of space to fit my backpack under the fly together with my small day pack.
It rained every night but not a drop got in the tent and it was quite roomy inside.
Definitely recommend this tent. I also slept on a blow up air mattress which did the trick as well and gave me a good nights sleep.

MemberAm I wrong in thinking that a bivy bag be more sufficient than a hootchie?
For those who don't know, a bivy bag is basically a waterproof (goretex) bag that fits over your sleeping bag (mozzie net included).
That would be my bet. Very light, very insect and waterproof.
