EXPERIENCE
Another staff member who needs no introduction as a lot of you will know him already, Ramsy Idau from Saga Village in Kokoda. Ramsy has been with us since the beginning walking as a porter working his way up to a guide. He is also one of our fittest staff and won our last Kokoda Challenge Race from Kokoda to Owers’ Corner in 18 hours.
He has a fun outgoing personality which makes him very likeable. I once had a trekker describe him as follows: ‘Ramsy could play and sing with his uke’ule under water with marbles in his mouth’ and still look after me! unquote. After he won our race in PNG I flew him to Australia to compete in a race in the Blue Mountains. Poor Ramsy looked so cold and later had to withdraw but other competitors made such a fuss of him which made him feel special.
He is 38 years old, married with a family. I asked him how he trained for the race he won and he replied that he used to wait for the Oil Tanker to come along the road and then try and race it up the road. Well it worked, he beat all the others even overseas Australian seasoned competitors such as Jonathan O’Loughlin who came 5th in this year’s Ultra Trail Australia 100km race. Keep up the good work Ramsy!
