MemberThere are places on this planet where you can go to and cannot shake of the feeling of being there and having done what you did it makes you want to go back and do it again. And there are people you meet who have had such an impact in your life you would never forget them and one day hope to see them again.
Sometimes you undergo life-changing experiences and sometimes there are places you?ve been to or experiences you have underwent you don?t want to go back there. For some people they are just so happy with the experience they?d look for another opportunity to go back and do it again.
Kokoda Trail, the infamous WWII trek located in the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea is one hell of place that can turn your moments into one hell of an adventure. With its steep and hazardous conditions, coupled with tropical humid weather, and the smiling faces of the friendly villagers who despite their harsh livelihoods are prepared to welcome a stranger, and the experienced village porters and guides Kokoda Trail is just one of those rare experience that can make you trekking extremely challenging but an awfully memorable one.
Australian Mark Priest, know what its like on the horrendous WWII trek. He has completed the trail on nine days during the Anzac Day trek this year with some of his Aussie mates and he has made a come back and plans on making yet another trek on the trail next year.
Mark returns to PNG two weeks after his April trek only this time he accompanies Walter Deas, an internationally renowned underwater filmmaker and owner of Sea West Productions to do a documentary based on the diving wreck, the American?s 1943 B-25 in Madang?s waters. Walter, an award winner of some of the most outstanding underwater documentaries is putting together the documentary titled the ?The Bomber Reef?.
?At present moment the program should run about 50 minutes. Still awaiting interviews from the USA, a pilot who was on the same mission as the crashed aircraft and the son of Major Cox, the sole survivor. These will govern part of the timing,? Walter says of the documentary.
However, he is still seeking footage of people in the old days in villages, etc. and or footage of the groups at dance festivals. The award-winning underwater filmmaker is also presently working in a new documentary – Jais Aben Aquaventures promo.
Both Mark and Walter booked in at the idyllic Jais Aben Resort in Madang and filmed the underwater depths along the Astrolabe Bay to enable them to finish the documentary started by Walter in 2002. (See full Story)
They arrived in Port Moresby, exhausted and tired after their retreat in Madang but genuinely satisfied with their work. Mark also did a joint production with the African based Aqua Culture. The film titled Sea Quest was a world-wide production and was aired on National Geography.
However, it seems nothing intrigued him more than his Kokoda adventure. Mark seemed obviously pleased with his journey on these mountainous paradise and would like to feel the pain once more and maybe laugh like he never did before.
Located along the Owen Stanley Ranges the WWII track traverses through some of the most horrendous slopes and steep valleys. Mark said he had such a memorable time during his Anzac Day trek this year, he plans on coming back for another Anzac track next year.
?I had such a good time I want to come back and trek again. The boys (porters and guides) made such a great company on the trail. At times they were awfully funny. It was a great experience for me,? Mark laughs when he recalls his trek with the boys from Extreme Kokoda Trekking Adventure Tours.
Asked about his views on problems affecting law and order in the country Mark simply says: ?It doesn?t stop me from coming to PNG. I think there is not a place on earth that is safe. As long as you know your way around or you know people and people know you nothing will happen to you.?
