Thousands of fallen heroes of World War II were again remembered yesterday as Papua New Guinea joins it neighbors Australia and New Zealand to commemorate the ANZAC Day.

The celebration started with a dawn service followed by the main highlight of the event was the laying of wreathes by the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, Australian High Commissioner, Michael Potts and New Zealand High Comissioner Laurie Markes.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Bomana War Cemetary on the outskirts of the Port Moresby City to commemorate the day and pay tribute to Australian New Zealand and members of the then Papua New Guinea infantry battalions who died in the campaign.

The Prime Minister and the members of the diplomatic corps joined by friends and relatives of those who died in Papua New Guinea during WWII.

Speaking during the occasion yesterday, Mr. Potts said the celebration of ANZAC day was an important event as it symbolizes military links between Australia and New Zealand with their neighboring Pacific countries including PNG.

The Anzac ceremony, he said, is a resonant event whereby everyone gather together to remember their fallen heroes.

And one of the ways ? seemingly the most profound way to remember was to walk Kokoda Trail where the battle (campaign) raged some 62 years ago. For many years now young Australians and New Zealanders have walked the 97 kilometer trail to commemorate Anzac Day.

In fact eight of the trekkers from Australia have just come back from Kokoda and just in time to commemorate the Anzac Day yesterday.

The Anzac day is also to remember the Gallipoli campaign during World War I..

    Ends..
