Close on 5pm three trekkers emerged from the International Terminal building and did a tour of Port Moresby with me before heading back to the airport to pick up James McAuley who arrived on the 6pm flight from Cairns. The flight must have arrived early as when we arrived at 6:10 he was already outside patiently waiting for us. We then drove up to Sogeri Lodge where they spent the night.

This morning they had breakfast and we headed out to Owers' Corner for the drop off. Trekkers on this trek include :

    • Michael Vertigan
    • David Hosking
    • Heather McInnes
    • James McAuley

The photographs below were taken at Sogeri Lodge today 17th September, 2011.

All photographs taken today have been posted on Facebook – http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1…5970&type=1

At Owers' Corner the boys had a surprise waiting for David as we heard yesterday that it was his birthday! On our arrival, our Kokoda Trekking staff gathered around and sang him not one but two 'Happy Birthday' songs. David then cut the chocolate cake that was waiting for him. Heather decided not to have any but the others tucked in along with our boys.

Our staff then started arranging their belongings into the trekkers backpacks. Webber was holding up the show as David had a smaller sized pack and he found it hard to get his items somehow attached to the pack. Patience however was on our side and it was not too long before they were all lined up at the starting blocks, being the archway at Owers' Corner.

    Two group photographs were taken:

Everyone took their place and it was soon time to walk off. The food porters moved off first closely followed by personal porters and their trekkers and last off the ranks is the guide Trevor Jinga.

It was soon time to bid farewll to trek 702 as they headed down the hill and around the bend on their first descent to Goldie River. If everyone goes ok, the plan is to pull up tonight at Ua'Ule Creek.

Trevor sent me a text at 2:06 from Imita Ridge saying they were at the top and about to head down to Ua'Ule Creek. He added all was good, so excellent news!

Our guide called in today from Maguli Range around 4pm saying they were all ok and were heading for Nauro to spend the night and should reach their destination by 5pm. So all is good! Will pass on your message Tori as soon as I can.

They are now heading for Isurava so should hear from them later today. The last couple of days they have been down low so its not uncommon unless they have an emergency to receive calls especially if they are taking a bit longer during the day which I believe they are due to them taking it at a slow pace, one foot after the other. Will post as soon as they make contact.

Will also let Heather know the change in flight time.

Hi everyone, trekkers are now at Isurava Village and will walk off the track tomorrow. Turns out they are going at a slower pace but doing well and will be celebrating come tomorrow!

Message from Michael to his family:

I am told to inform you that 'a silly old australian with an injured ankle has struggled but is almost @ the finishing line' – unquote

I am told that Heather wanted to talk to me but she was down at the village and Trevor was up where they could get a signal so will catch her tomorrow first chance I can.
