MemberStephen McCarthy and Klaus Wilde arrived in Port Moresby yesterday and headed off to the Crowne Plaza Hotel where we met up with them later in the afternoon in the bar area enjoying a quiet drink or two. When I told them about their early flight they looked like oh no, we will have to hit the sack earlier then expected.
This morning they were supposed to arrive around 4:40am too book in but turned up about 5:15 so perhaps had a good time last night after all. I asked for their paper work and Klaus no matter how hard he looked could not find it. About this time it was apparent he appreciated his partner back home who he indicated takes care of such things for him. He also mentioned his office so can only assume he has a good 'PA' on hand there to keep him organised.
All jokes aside, they were as happy as Larry this morning as they looked forward to their new adventure of walking the track. They have set themselves a cracking pace wanting to walk it 4 nights 5 days but certainly look fit enough for the task that awaits them. Stephen spoke like he had already done a bit of walking in his time so no doubt will have some idea of what challenge awaits them on the hills of Kokoda.
As I type this, they have been collected from Guria airport in Popondetta and are on their way to Kokoda. If they feel ok they will commence their walk today. If feeling sleepy from their early start, they will spend the day relaxing at our base Orohaven Kokoda Retreat and will start their walk tomorrow. Will keep you informed when I hear later in the day their decision.

MemberTrekkers are on the move and decided to commence walking straight away today rather then rest at Orohaven and walk tomorrow. Their guide is Kingsley Boropi who called us from Kovelo saying they planned on stopping at Isurava Village to spend the night. I asked how they were all going and he said good, they are quite fast and moving along really well, however, had not hit the hills which might slow them down.

MemberAfter spending the first night at Deniki trekkers walked on down to Eora Creek and tonight are at Naduri. I just spoke to the trek champion Brendan Buka who walked with them and turned back from Eora Creek.
He said the two trekkers are really fast and not finding any problems whatsoever!

MemberStephen and Klaus have now passed the half way point and are heading for the finish line. Have not heard from them today but they should be now around the Agulogo/Menari area.

MemberSpoke to Klaus yesterday at Maguli Range and he seemed excited to be finishing today! Kingsley their guide said that these guys are really fast and on the uphills they have trouble keeping up but catch them on the downhills. Is this a race? appears, its the aussies vs the pngeans.
Jokes aside, they were in good spirits and looking forward to coming out today at Owers' Corner and having a few beers with the boys!

MemberA phone call yesterday informed us they would be up at Owers' Corner around 10am this morning. However, just as we were about to hop in the car to drive out and pick them up, we received a call from Klaus informing us they were already at Owers' having climbed the last hill at 8am.
By the time we arrived at Owers' Corner it was close on 9:15 and they guys had their gear washed and drying on the grass and looked very relaxed sitting around with their guide and porters.

MemberA few drinks later and we were on the road heading for Port Moresby. We arrived in town at 10:45 and after a detour via the Air Niugini travel office, we drove them to the Crowne Plaza where they got their gear they left behind so they could head out to Loloata Dive Resort on the outskirts of Port Moresby.
Turns out these guys were up here a month or so ago diving at Loloata when Dik Knight the owner took them for a short walk down to Goldie River. As they enjoyed it so much they returned home and planned another trip to PNG, this time to walk the whole track and then do some more diving.
As we drove into the road that led to Bootless Bay, I looked at my watch and it was close on midday. An earlier phone call to Loloata informed us they would send a boat over to pick them up but when we arrived there was no boat.
Another phone call and the banana boat was on its way. However, while we were waiting, Dik turned up with a whole lot of mattresses he had purchased and suddently the game plan was changed and they were about to head over to Loloata on the much bigger boat owned by Loloata. I took the opportunity to take another photograph before they took off on their next adventure of more diving on the island.
