Tour Operator Newsletter – October 2010 – Re one of the articles mentioned in their newsletter – quote:

    KOKODA AIRSTRIP

The airstrip is looking much better than it was several months ago thanks to the work that KTA has been undertaking. Green grass rather than high weeds are starting to spread along the outer edges of the strip, with the overall length of usable strip now around 1000m. Along with the green grass and the new white marker cones, it is now an impressive site when approaching to land.

Correction: Ourselves, Kokoda Trekking have been maintaining the airstrip for several months and have been proud of the new look of the runway and sides. Russell Eroro along with Kokoda Trekking porters have manually cut the grass from one end to the other with hand held lawn mowers on a timely basis to keep the grass low. They have also sprayed the weeds along the drains etc.

Yesterday when the newsletter came out, Russell was hurt that KTA took all the 'credit' and did not even mention Kokoda Trekking's contribution to the new look of the Kokoda Airport.

At Orohaven Kokoda Retreat, KTA have left their tractor lawnmower donated by Rotary International for use on the airstrip under our care but have refused to allow the use of it by us to cut the grass on the airstrip.

Kokoda Trekking then went out and purchased four new hand held lawnmowers to do the job. Earlier in the year Brian Boon (KTA) and others initially cleared and mowed the airstrip and placed cone markers. Later the LLG mowed the landing area only until Kokoda Trekking came on the scene and took over the maintenance.

It has therefore, been Kokoda Trekking who have kept the area mowed and clean for all trekking companies use as well as the airlines and feel we should get some credit for the hard manual work carried out on a timely basis.

Many of you may recall if you are a regular to our website, that we built the old terminal building and surrounding win haus's and also maintained the airstrip free of charge for several years.
