This morning we met up with all trekkers in this trek with the exception of one who arrived this afternoon. Megan unfortunately ended up with toothache and needed to see a dentist this morning. The plan to pick up the group from the Gateway Hotel, take them to Bomana War Cemetery, then the dentist. Megan went to her dentist appointment and the others walked around town and did some shopping. The guide for this trek is Wallace Lemeki who met with them and accompanied during their drive out of town and the walk around the CBD of Port Moresby.

The porters for this trek arrived in around midday so all is going according to plan for this trek. The trekkers in this group include :

    • Helen Lee
    • Megan White
    • Sally Waldron
    • Grant Nicholson
    • Greg Wilde
    • Shelley Hoey
    • Tom De Landre

Our Kokoda Trekking staff on this trek include : Wallace Lemeki (Guide); Kingsley Boropi (Assistant Guide)
Personal Porters: Garni Bore; Benan Aruo; Javara Unene; Chris Lahai and Jerry Imaita
Food Porters: Humphry Embere; Steven Amuli; Alban Ema; Wilson Sevesi & Blausis Susapu (doubles as guitar player)

Four of the trekkers listed have competed in the 96km Kokoda Challenge Race held on the Gold Coast annually each year. Their team raised the most money and Kokoda Trekking gave them a free trek as part of their prize. They were supposed to walk last year but an injury stopped this from happening. As they all wanted to walk together, their trek was postponed until May 2010.

The photograph below was taken outside the Gateway Hotel.

On the way out to Sogeri we stopped off at Rouna Falls so they could stretch their legs and take in the waterfall surrounding this area.

After we reached Owers' Corner trekkers met their personal porters who will carry their trek. We once again took photographs of trekkers and their individual porters.

Not long after the above photograph was taken, our attention was drawn to Megan and Sally. It turned out Sally had slipped on the very first descent and Megan was laughing as she asked, Gail did you get that? I was a bit slow as I had to turn on my camera and take the photograph – hence Shelley is almost to her feet when I clicked….both girls were laughing as they walked off down the hill.

Wallace and the other guys at the rear were talking amongst themselves as to who was going to shadow the girls. Earlier on, Wallace joked about how he had never been on a trek with so many women so was looking forward to showing them a good time. Two women had walked Kokoda before, I think from memory it was these two who so bravely walked off carrying their own packs…well done!!!
