Last night and again this morning I met up with our 8 trekkers who headed out from Owers' Corner today for the first of our Anzac Treks. These guys are on a 9 day trek and should walk out in Kokoda on the 23rd April. Seventeen of our KTL staff are accompanying them which are made up of guys who knows the history; a medical officer who took leave for this trek; a well known singer, a practical joker; a guitar player and lots of uke'ule players.

No doubt this trek should be fun based on the humour from the trekkers combined with the boys culture and way of thinking.

Wallace phoned up around 3pm today saying they had reached Imita Ridge and were heading down to Ua'Ule Creek where they plan on spending their first night in the bush on the Kokoda Trail.

Trekkers are made up as follows:

    • Ken Toombs (4th time anzac trekker)
    • Chris Wood
    • Kevin Nichols
    • Jim McGowan
    • Wayne Norman
    • Leigh Davies
    • Chris Gass
    • Chris Isherwood

Before heading off on their walk, Wallace our guide invited his staff to sing the PNG National Anthem. An added surprise was that he asked our aussie trekkers to sing the Australian Anthem.

Both the PNG and Australian anthems were sung with great gusto. In fact it surprised me that all trekkers sang every word such was the aussie spirit of these guys who headed out today.

Update 19th April: Have just heard from Wallace Lemeki at Maguli Ridge to say everyone is doing well and tonight they will reach Agulogo campsite area. Apparently there are some big groups coming up behind them.

It seems trekkers were interviewed at Ioribaiwa Village by 60 minutes which will be aired on the 2nd May. Also present at the same location were a team of doctors who this year are testing the blood of trekkers. This whole process took some two hours and the group ended up staying the night at Ofi Creek instead of Naoro Village. As they are on a 9 day trek this does not create a problem and as a result are on target to finish on the 23rd May into Kokoda.
