Are these allowed into PNG? Thinking stuff like Aeroguard (mozzie/insect repellant). I have heard that the brand 'Bushman's' comes in a roll-on form and was wondering if it was any good. Deodorant is not a problem as I know that comes in a roll-on form. Finding an anti-perspirant roll-on is difficult though…

What about things like sunscreen & toothpaste? I don't mind not brushing my teeth for 9 days, but I'm sure others around me certainly will if I open my mouth to speak! Is toothpaste and sunscreen in tubes ok to bring? How should I pack these so they don't burst in my pack? I don't really want to use a toiletry bag as this can take up a lot of space in my pack. Wrap them up in a freezer bag/zip-lock bag?

    Also, soaps. My husband and his father are often away for work, staying at many different hotels around Australia. From their travels, they have collected many small 'hotel' soaps. I figured these would be ideal to bring as;
    1) they are small & compact
    2) they are individually wrapped, so if you lose one, it's no big deal.
    3) they save me buying soap that camping stores try to sell.

Lastly, toilet paper or packets of Wet Ones?

Any thoughts/comments would be great. Thanks.

    Hi

I use and can recommend Bushman's Plus which has 80% deet and sunscreen but test it first particularly if you have sensitive skin and keep away from around eyes and other sensitive areas, test it before you leave. I took two tubes only used one but will take two again next time just in case the mossies are bad.

Talking of mossies whilst not many I have seen more around here where I live than I did on the trek, we had 7 days rain out of 9 and our porters told us that we would have seen a lot more if it had not rained as much. I only saw one leech the whole trek. Bushman's will repel leeches as well.

Toothpaste take a small tube it will travel well with you and you will be happy that you took it.

Soap I use and can recommend the Wilderness Wash in 100ml travel packs one will be plenty. You can tie a lanyard around it if you are worried about loosing it I did not.

Deodorant Ant-perspirant I use Nivea Pure whilst perhaps a little heavy does the job very well there are other similar ones in the ilse of your local supermarket perhaps lighter and more suitable for you personally.

Whilst not required this time I did carry within my first aid kit a small tube of Stingose Gel just in case I got some bites as this will help stop the itching and your scratching.

I had a couple of those white bank cash bags that I used for both my toiletries and eating utensils both these bags got a little mouldy and smelly during the trek I now have some mesh bags that will breathe where the others did not and will not get mouldy as the "bank" bags did.

Toilet Rolls I took two rolls as I stayed on in Kokoda for a few days after the trek One may have just done the job but IF I had any stomach problems the second one would have been required. You must certainly keep this very dry would be nothing worse then wet toilet paper. Incidentally I did not find the toilets to bad but I did get in and out just as soon as I could. I will take two again next time.

Hope the above helps a little.

Re toilet paper: I took anti-bacterial wipes. These were not only useful as toilet paper, but also for cleaning toilet seats. They fitted easily into my back pocket and were therefore available at all times.

Remember that internationals have 100ml rules – that is, can't take ANYTHING in a tube or bottle in hand luggage greater than 100 ml, and everything less must be in a clear sealed snaplock bag, including lip gloss and roll ons. In your main luggage, I suggest still sealing in snaplock bags – saves a BIG mess when things leak.
First time i took johnsons baby shampoo, and the second time the eco friendly stuff. Sorry to those I offend, but the baby shampoo was the best – I washed me, my hair, my clothes and even my dishes in it!
I don't advise aerosols – always a risk on planes.
I also don't recommend lots of small packets of soaps and shampoos on the trek – cakes of soap are often very polluting, and what will you do with all the empties? Someone has to dispose of all the rubbish – either burned, buried or carried out.
As for toilet paper – being a girl, I took a double length roll and a single roll. Each of these was put on a string (great for hanging around your neck, or on a pole when squating), and then in a snap lock bag with hand sanitizer with it. (first trip I used the lot – second trip less than a roll) I tried the baby wipes, but found them too iritating, too heavy to carry the required amount, and too bulky. I kept a small packet of handwipes for emergencies, but generally used my sweat rag (which I washed frequently and each night) for everything from a face washer to hand cleaner as required.
